How to become a TEFL teacher

Hello lovelies!

So my inbox has been flowing full of questions about how I got to be a teacher in Thailand! So thought I’d write a post on how easy it is :D

Once you have finished University, you need a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification, you can do this online. However, if you’d prefer an in-class experience, with face to face learning, I’d recommend signing up for the company that trained me, TEFL Heaven Thailand.

TEFL heaven offer the whole package. The 120 hour (3 week) qualification in a paradise location (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Chang, Koh Samui or Koh Panghan) taught by experienced teachers in a classroom. Complete with a guaranteed paid teaching job at the end!

The training covers everything you need, starting with how to plan a lesson (and curriculum if needed!) and how to adapt to suit the classes ability.

How to teach grammar and tenses (Thai language only has 1 tense).

It's really fun! Especially learning through games, which is the most used method in classrooms.

Then there's class management and dealing with those naughty kids!

(more on that later)

Half way through the training, there's the chance to put all you have learnt into action, with a 2 day summer camp!

Authentic open-air school bus transport!

The classes are small in size and the kids are so excited to see you it makes it really fun, taking away a lot of the anxiety of teaching!

It's an amazing experience with the native children.

Traditional school lunches provides the opportunity to try new (and unusual) foods!

All trainee's plan a lesson and adapt it to teach to different classes.

Back in your classroom, you are taught about Thai Culture and have an hours Thai language lesson each day, which is really useful, to be the student in a foreign lesson and when adapting to Thai life!

Throughout the training, 3 written assessments (lesson planning, grammar and self reflection) must be completed along with ‘hot topics’ (planning and teaching a lesson with no notice) then presenting to the group.

And voila! Officially a qualified TEFL teacher!!

The wonderful women who trained me - Emilie and Kelly.

24 brand new English teachers!

On top of all this, you’re training on a beach in Thailand!! There’s so much fun to be had with a network of like-minded people to be friends with!

Then there's the guaranteed teaching job! I was placed in Nontaburi, Northern Bangkok, at Chonprathan Wittaya School, teaching Kindergarten, year 2 and year 3.

(The amount of kindergarteners I taught in a week!)

It can be testing at times but is the best decision I have ever made and I wouldn’t change it for the world! Completing TEFLheaven was invaluable and having a group of 22 other people made it so easy and fun!

The monthly wage is triple the national average, allowing comfortable living and leaves

funds left over for weekend and half term travels!

Not only will you have the best experience becoming a teacher, your qualification is certified all over the globe - its your world travel ticket!

When thanking TEFL heaven for my amazing experience, I told them about those of you who are interested. They are thrilled and have set up a special offer to anyone who would like to join their April 2017 course:

Using code “ADULTHOOD” on the website application, you will receive £50 off the course price!

I hope to see you soon!

Zoe
